EUDAIMONIA (NOUN, ANCIENT GREEK): HAPPINESS


Eudaimonia literally means having a "good guardian spirit" watching over you, guiding you to objectively successful outcomes in life. Aristotle gave the classic account of eudaimonia in "Nicomachean Ethics" (c. 350 BC), Emphasizing that it derived from a life of virtue lived consistently according to reason. For Aristotle, the opposite of eudaimonia was not unhappiness, but rather an unremarkable life or mediocrity. Aristotle believed that eudaimonia is an exceptional and rare form of happiness.
